Hartalika Teej, one of the most auspicious Hindu festivals dedicated to Goddess Parvati, will be observed with great devotion this year on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. The festival holds special importance for women across states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, where devotees pray for marital harmony, prosperity, and well-being.
Significance of Hartalika Teej
The festival commemorates the reunion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, symbolising love, devotion, and togetherness. As per tradition, Goddess Parvati undertook severe penance to win Lord Shiva as her consort, and Hartalika Teej marks this sacred bond. Women observe the Swarna Gauri Vrat, seeking blessings for a happy married life, peace, and progeny.
Rituals and Observances
On this day, devotees prepare idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati from clay or sand and perform elaborate pujas. Married and unmarried women alike participate in the rituals, dressing in traditional green or red attire and adorning themselves with mehndi, bangles, and suhaag symbols.
Many women undertake the nirjala vrat, a stringent fast where no food or water is consumed for 24 hours. However, in some households, elderly or ailing women are permitted to observe a phalahar vrat, which allows fruits or light liquids.
The Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha, narrating Goddess Parvati’s devotion and determination, is recited as part of the rituals. Offerings of flowers, fruits, sweets, and water are made to the deities, and prayers are conducted with diyas and incense.
