The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) announced on Wednesday its plan to conduct a comprehensive 60-day survey targeting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This initiative aims to facilitate the adoption of emerging technologies within the realms of 5G and 6G, marking a significant step towards the digital transformation of these industries.

Aligning with Industry 4.0 Vision

The DoT’s proposed baseline survey aligns with its broader vision of fostering a digital transformation across MSMEs. By embracing Industry 4.0 applications, the survey intends to prepare industries for the technological advancements brought about by 5G and 6G networks. The initiative underscores the importance of creating a robust ecosystem that can leverage the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and advanced network integrations.

Addressing MSME Challenges

A primary objective of the survey is to understand the specific challenges MSMEs face in adopting advanced Industry 4.0 technologies. By identifying these obstacles, the DoT aims to provide tailored support that will help MSMEs harness the full potential of AI, IoT, and cloud computing, integrated with next-generation network technologies. This understanding is crucial for laying the groundwork for a future-ready industrial ecosystem.

Call for Proposals

In preparation for the survey, the DoT has invited organizations and startups to submit their proposals by June 11, 2024. This call for participation emphasizes the collaborative approach the DoT seeks to adopt, encouraging a diverse range of stakeholders to contribute to the initiative. The involvement of innovative startups is particularly expected to bring fresh perspectives and solutions to the table.

Sector-Specific Focus

The survey will target sector-specific needs across at least ten sectors, ensuring that the support provided is both targeted and effective. By focusing on these distinct sectors, the DoT aims to foster innovation and enhance the competitiveness of MSMEs in varied fields. This strategic approach is designed to cater to the unique requirements of different industries, thereby maximizing the impact of the technological adoption.

Geographic Scope and Policy Recommendations

Covering five sectors in both North and South India, the survey’s geographic scope ensures a comprehensive understanding of regional variations and needs. Over the 60-day period, the findings and key recommendations from the survey will serve as a foundation for policy interventions. These policies will be pivotal in driving the widespread adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies, setting the stage for MSMEs to thrive in the evolving digital landscape.

This initiative by the DoT marks a critical step in enhancing the technological capabilities of MSMEs, ensuring they are well-equipped to leverage the transformative potential of 5G and 6G technologies.
