Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tokyo on Friday, beginning a two-day official visit to participate in the 15th India–Japan Annual Summit. The visit, held at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, marks Modi’s first standalone trip to Japan in nearly seven years and is aimed at deepening the “Special Strategic and Global Partnership” between the two nations.
Strengthening Bilateral Agenda
On arrival, Modi noted that India and Japan are continuing to expand their cooperation in development and innovation. “As India and Japan continue to strengthen their developmental cooperation, I look forward to engaging with PM Ishiba and others during this visit,” he posted on X.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that the discussions in Tokyo will remain fully dedicated to the bilateral agenda. Modi last attended an annual summit in Japan in 2018, making this his first direct bilateral visit since then and his eighth overall since assuming office in 2014.
The two leaders are expected to review progress in multiple areas and discuss regional as well as global issues of shared interest. The summit will also outline the “next phase” of the India–Japan partnership, with new initiatives likely in emerging technologies, clean energy, supply chain resilience, and skill development.
Expanding Trade and Investment
India–Japan trade stood at USD 22.8 billion in 2023–24. Japan continues to be one of India’s largest sources of foreign direct investment, contributing USD 43.2 billion up to December 2024. Both sides are also pursuing cooperation in semiconductors, startups, industrial competitiveness, and infrastructure development.
Itinerary in Japan
After landing at Haneda International Airport, Modi attended a business event and met several Japanese dignitaries. He was also presented with a Daruma Doll by the Chief Priest of Shorinzan Daruma Temple before concluding the day with the formal Annual Summit meeting with PM Ishiba.
On Saturday, the Prime Minister is scheduled to interact with Japan’s National Governor’s Association, join a working lunch hosted by PM Ishiba, and tour the Tokyo Electron Factory.
Next Stop: SCO Summit in China
Following his engagements in Japan, Modi will depart on August 31 for Tianjin, China, to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.
