Bharat Bandh on July 9: Major Services in Bengaluru May Be Disrupted

Bharat bandh on July 9 Will Bengaluru schools, banks and other services be affected

Bengaluru is likely to witness disruptions across several sectors on Tuesday, July 9, as a nationwide strike — Bharat Bandh — has been called by a coalition of ten central trade unions and their affiliated organisations. The strike is in protest against the central government’s policies, which the unions have termed “anti-worker, anti-farmer, and pro-corporate.”

With over 25 crore workers expected to participate across India, Bengaluru — a hub of banking, IT, and public services — could be significantly affected.

Key Services That May Be Disrupted in Bengaluru

Banking and Insurance

Bank operations in the city could be delayed or disrupted, with the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and the Bengal Provincial Bank Employees Association supporting the strike. Services such as cheque clearance, customer service, and loan processing may be impacted.

Insurance sector employees are also likely to join the bandh, which may slow down customer queries and policy servicing operations.

Postal and Government Services

Employees from the postal department are expected to participate in the strike, potentially affecting deliveries and public services. Although government offices are expected to remain open, reduced staff presence could lead to delays in administrative tasks.

Transport and Utilities

While Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) have not officially declared service suspension, commuters are advised to prepare for potential delays or cancellations.

In addition, workers from the coal and power sectors — including over 27 lakh electricity workers — are expected to join the strike. While major power outages are not anticipated, minor service interruptions could occur.

Schools, Colleges, and the Private Sector

Educational Institutions

The Karnataka government has not declared a holiday for schools and colleges. Most institutions in Bengaluru are expected to operate as usual, but attendance may be affected due to possible transport disruptions or safety concerns.

Corporate Sector

Many private companies, especially IT firms and startups, are keeping a close eye on the situation. Some may offer work-from-home options to employees as a precaution. App-based delivery and logistics services may also face delays if protests block major roads or hubs.

Why the Bharat Bandh Is Being Held

The striking unions have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the central government’s labour policies. They accuse the government of undermining workers’ rights by not holding the Indian Labour Conference for the past decade, attempting to enforce new labour codes that weaken collective bargaining, and favouring employers under the guise of improving the ease of doing business.

They also argue that the government has shifted away from a welfare-oriented approach, instead aligning policies to benefit large Indian and foreign corporations.

What to Expect on July 9 in Bengaluru

Residents are advised to stay updated on local advisories, avoid non-essential travel, and make necessary preparations in anticipation of possible service slowdowns.
