India Hosts Inaugural 'Blue Talks' Meeting in Collaboration with France and Costa Rica

The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) successfully organized the 1st ‘Blue Talks’ meeting today, a pioneering initiative in collaboration with the Embassy of France and the Embassy of Costa Rica in India. With over 50 participants from government, academia, and research institutes, the in-person gathering focused on high-level discussions pertaining to ‘Ocean Health and Governance.’

The meeting, co-chaired by the Secretary of MoES, Dr. M. Ravichandran, the Ambassador of France to India, Mr. Thierry Mathou, and Costa Rica Chargée d’affaires, Ms. Sofia Salas Monge, witnessed comprehensive deliberations on critical issues surrounding the ocean.

This event serves as a precursor to the upcoming High-Level Event on Ocean Action (HLEOA) named ‘Immersed in Change,’ scheduled for 7th-8th June 2024 in San Jose, Costa Rica. ‘HLEOA’ is strategically designed to gather recommendations and visions, contributing to the forthcoming United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3).

Primary Objectives of 1st Blue Talks Meeting:

Structured into three sections, the 2-hour meeting included a showcase of a movie by the Costa Rican embassy on the purpose of the upcoming ‘HLEOA’ event, three technical talks on different themes in the second session, and an open discussion session on ocean matters. The concluding session summarized key recommendations and outlined the way forward for the future ocean event.

India, through this meeting, showcased its commitment to the UNOC3 2025. Recognized for its pivotal role in ocean science and maritime development, India aligns its programs and policies with global commitments, ensuring the sustainable harnessing of marine resources.

Moreover, MoES, India, has been acknowledged as a lead partner for the upcoming Ocean Conference in Nice in 2025, underscoring the nation’s dedication to international cooperation on these crucial global issues. India eagerly anticipates working closely with France and Costa Rica to prepare for this significant global event.
