The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), a part of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MoSJ&E), Government of India, is set to host a unique event, ‘Divya Kala Mela,’ from December 29, 2023, to January 7, 2024, in Surat, Gujarat. Organized through the National Divyangjan Finance and Development Corporation (NDFDC), an apex corporation under DEPwD, the event aims to showcase the diverse products and craftsmanship of Divyang entrepreneurs and artisans from across the country.
The ‘Divya Kala Mela’ promises to be an enthralling experience for visitors, featuring a wide array of vibrant products from various regions, including Jammu and Kashmir, the North Eastern states, and more. The showcased items will span categories such as handicrafts, handlooms, embroidery works, packaged food, and more, providing a comprehensive overview of the rich talents of Divyangjan individuals.
This initiative is a significant step towards the economic empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (PwD) or Divyangjan. The event offers a larger platform for marketing and showcasing the unique products and skills of Divyang entrepreneurs. The Surat edition marks the 12th installment in the series that began in 2022, with previous editions held in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bhopal, Guwahati, Indore, Jaipur, Varanasi, Secunderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Patna.
Approximately 100 Divyang artisans, artists, and entrepreneurs from about 20 states and Union Territories will be participating, displaying their diverse range of products and skills. The showcased items will fall under broad categories, including Home Décor & Lifestyle, Clothing, Stationery, eco-friendly products, packaged food, organic products, Toys & Gifts, and Personal Accessories like Jewellery and Clutch Bags.
The ‘Divya Kala Mela,’ Surat, will be open to the public from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM for 10 days, offering ample opportunities for individuals to support and promote local craftsmanship. It encourages everyone to go ‘vocal for local’ by purchasing products made by determined Divyang craftsmen.
In addition to the product displays, the event will host a series of cultural activities, featuring performances by Divyang artists and well-known professionals. Visitors can also savor their favorite regional foods at the event, adding a delightful culinary dimension to the experience.
Scheduled to be inaugurated on December 29, 2023, at 4:00 PM by the Union Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, the event will be graced by various other dignitaries. The Department has ambitious plans to promote this concept further, with ‘Divya Kala Mela’ set to be organized across the country during the 2023-2024 period.
