The ICAR-Research Complex for Eastern Region, Patna, organized an awareness programme on “Balanced Fertilizer Use and Natural Farming” on May 1, 2026, at Silhauri village under Silhauri-Bilhouri Panchayat in Dulhin Bazar block of Patna district.
The programme aimed to sensitize farmers about improving soil health through the judicious and balanced application of fertilizers and encouraging the adoption of natural farming practices. Experts highlighted that indiscriminate and excessive use of chemical fertilizers, particularly urea, can deteriorate soil structure and reduce its long-term fertility. They stressed that integrating organic and natural farming approaches can significantly enhance soil quality while also lowering input costs.
As part of the initiative, dhaincha seeds were distributed among the participating farmers. Detailed guidance was provided on the use of dhaincha as a green manure crop, emphasizing its role in enriching soil fertility and reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers. Farmers were encouraged to cultivate dhaincha and incorporate it into the soil at the appropriate stage for maximum benefit.
The programme was carried out by the team led by Dr. Ashutosh Upadhyaya, Head of the Division of Land and Water Management. The team included Dr. Rajni Kumari, Senior Scientist; Abhishek Kumar, Farm Manager; Prem Pal Kumar; and other supporting staff.
A total of 24 farmers participated in the programme, including 20 male and 4 female farmers. The session also underscored the importance of natural farming practices, including the use of vermicompost and other organic inputs.
